The word "Upnishad" consists of three words with specific meanings. 'Upa' means near, 'ni' means down and 'shad' means to sit. Obviously to sit at the feet of teacher to get knowledge is the complete meaning of the word Upnishad.
Actually the Upanishads are the collection of ideas and teachings of the people and thinker who spent their precious time and knowledge to find out the real meaning of life. These book contains the teachings of various religious teachers and saints.

The Upanishads are known as books of philosophy and considered to have more spiritual and philosophical contents than Vedas.
